Scotch Turbine

Adjacent to the parking lot at the very southern tip of Lake Hopatcong is a monument for the Morris Canal with several plaques and this preserved Scotch Turbine. This ingenious device was used at the planes to convert the downward force of the canal water in the spillway into mechanical energy that would power the cables used to move the boats up and down the planes. Note the massive flange in the front of this turbine for reference in a later photo.
